![]() If you compare critical picks - conveniently averaged on - to what actually resonated with the public, you'll marvel at the canyonlike divide between the sheltered eggheads who pronounce judgments from an elitist bubble and the garbage-chomping proletariat who soak up whatever pop culture smacks them in the nose. While there was much consensus among the chattering classes, the actual number of films, TV shows and albums anyone who doesn't boast a degree in music, film or popular culture would recognize is about the same as the cultural appetite for Brussels sprouts or broiled liver. That was the question running through my mind after scanning the Top 10 lists of critics weighing in on the year just past. If a tree falls in the forest, does anybody hear?
